Damping-Driven Time Reversal for Waves

[collaboration with the ESPCI – Ecole Superieure de Physique Chimie de Paris]

We present a counterintuitive method to create a time-reversed wave by applying a time-controlled dissipation pulse. By successive application of this principle, we can destroy a monochromatic component of a broad band wave to make an “in situ” spectral hole burning. We demonstrate this technique numerically and an experimental proof is made with a system composed of levitating repelling magnets.
